Plaque Rupture

NOTE: Movies are best viewed in 16-bit (or greater) color mode and 1024 x 768 pixels resolution (or better).

This movie was obtained from video captured during an in-situ rupture of a plaque that was developed inside a 3-month cholestorol fed rabbit using the Rekhter-Ryan animal model outlined in the paper "Animal Model That Mimics Atherosclerotic Plaque Rupture" by Rekhter, et al. (Circ. Res. 1998).

In the black and white movie, the balloon catheter used to rupture the plaque can be seen inflating and ultimately breaking through the plaque at the shoulder region near the proximal (left) end.

Four still frames from the movie are shown below, illustrating the rupture process. Both a short and long version of the plaque rupture experiment is located below these images.
